They will work closely with you to design experiences and opportunities to try new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving that you can monitor and build into your day to day life. AI chatbots, often designed to be unconditionally agreeable (a trait called sycophancy), can validate harmful or incorrect thinking, leading to stagnation or even dangerous thought patterns.

AI systems struggle to understand and treat complex issues, unresolved trauma, or co-occurring disorders. These require the presence of a grounded trained and competent human being to facilitate co-regulation and provide safety.

When used as a supplement to human therapy, AI can be a valuable tool to increase accessibility and reinforce skills.

AI and specialised mental health apps are available 24/7 and offer a low-stakes, anonymous entry point for those who are hesitant or not yet ready to engage in full therapy, in remote areas, or experiencing mild, situational distress.

They are effective for delivering specific, structured tools, such as: Mood Tracking, Guided Meditation/Breathing Exercises, Journaling Prompts, and basic
psychoeducation aligned with CBT principles. Your therapist will provide these, and more, specifically suitable to you and your situation, but AI can be a helpful
introduction.

AI can provide general, well-researched information about common mental health conditions (like anxiety and depression) and coping strategies, serving as a valuable educational resource.

AI tools can help you stay engaged with your therapeutic work, providing quick check-ins or reminders to practise skills learned during human-led therapy.

It is vital to understand that AI is prone to errors that can be especially dangerous in a mental health context.

AI is susceptible to hallucinations (making confident, false statements) and algorithmic bias. In a crisis scenario, general-purpose chatbots have been shown
to fail to recognise suicidal intent, and in some documented cases, have provided instructions or normalising responses that can enable dangerous behaviour.

Relying heavily on an unconditionally supportive machine may foster an artificial dependence and prevent the user from developing essential, real-world social and relational skills learned through human interaction. Human beings are naturally drawn to engage in social interaction and will thrive with social support. AI cannot replace this.

Unlike licensed human therapists whose sessions are legally protected, most general AI tools are not compliant with medical privacy standards. The sensitive
information you share may be stored, analysed, and used to train future models or for other purposes.

AI tends to validate the user but often lacks the depth or clinical skill to guide deep psychological change. It can create an “echo chamber” that feels comforting but fails to address the root causes of distress.
